Patras is
a city in Western Greece and administrative center of the Patras province. It is located to the south of the coast of Corinthian Bay, on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Patras is the third largest city in Greece and the third largest port city following Athens and Thessaloniki. It is a starting point of the route of regular ferry services to Italy (Bari, Brindisi, Ancona and Venice). Interesting to see is the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, which connects Etoloakarnania with Peloponnese in Western Greece. The population of the city is about 171 616 people. Around the big central dome are located 12 smaller domes and it can accommodate up to 5000 believers on their prayer. Interesting attractions are the Apollon Theatre, the Roman Theatre, the Rio Castle or the Fortress of Patras. There are 4 museums that you can visit, as well as a wine tasting center. There are two carnivals. The first one is Patras’ Carnival (in January) - the largest event of that kind in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. It includes a variety of events like balls, parades, artistic projects, children’s carnivals. The other carnival is the Patras International Festival (in the summer), its program includes basic ancient drama and modern theatre as well as music events.
