Visit Meteora Greece
Meteora is an amazing place in Thessaly region in central Greece, near the city of Kalambaka. This is a group of seven operating monasteries, built on the top of hardly accessible sharp needle-like rocks. Whimsical rocks were once on the bottom of huge water basin. Shaped by the water and the wind, today they are impressive rock conglomerates. They rise 400m in the air over the lowlands of Thessaly, central Greece, and 70 km west of Larissa. Out of the 7 monasteries only 6 are open for visitors. In Greek the name Meteora means “between the land and sky” because of the fact that all the monasteries hang over a dizzy abyss. Meteora or “columns of the sky” as it is called from UNESCO, is included in the World Heritage List in 1988. During the Middle Agesbthe temples of Faith and God could have been reached only with wooden stairs and wicker baskets. Nowadays only 5 from all 24 built monasteries are active, which look like more to defensive fortresses or perhaps they really are. These are The Grand Meteora Monastery, St Varlaam Monastery, St Stefan Monastery, Holy Trinity Monastery and St Nicholas Anapafsas Monastery.
